Toon Times

On Friday 23rd November, Year 9 students from All Saints college went on a journey into Newcastle United's history. The students sorted artefacts from the clubs archives into a living timeline of the club's past. It was an amazing opportunity to get hands on with the past. From wooden studs that were nailed to boots, to a Premiership shirt worn by Les Ferdinand, it was interesting to see how much has changed in the game. However, as we excitedly enjoyed our tour around the stadium, it became clear that young people's passion for the Magpies is one thing that has not changed.

Premier League Challenge

"Not a bad view from our Private Box"
A massive well done to Courtney, Chris, Lee, Ellie & Ryan who were selected to represent NUFC in the recent Premier League Enterprise Challenge. Not only did the group beat off competition for fellow ASC students, they beat entrants from ALL schools in Newcastle.

The students spent time with the NUFC foundation at college to prepare for the final and arrived at St James Park (yes I am allowed to call it that) yesterday hoping to win an all expenses paid trip to London for the final of the Premier League Challenge.

"Photo opportunity with Local MP Catherine McKinnell"

The challenge tackled by the students was to suggest ways to improve the match day experience for fans at St James Park.

Unfortunately only 3 teams out of 10 could be chosen for the final and on the day, the group just missed out to students from Man City, Middlesbrough & Liverpool. The commitment and energy shown throughout the day by the students was outstanding and they represented the college fantastically well throughout the day.

"New signings get a grilling from the Press"
On the day students, had to give a 5 minute presentation in front of approximately 200 guests and also fielded questions from the judging panel which included Premier League & NUFC directors. Students were commended for their presentation with the judges reserving special praise for their attention to detail and creativity.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students for their efforts and attitude throughout the challenge.

St Nicholas Cathedral Flower Festival Competition

As part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, St. Nicholas Cathedral invited all students across Newcastle to enter an exciting and innovative fashion competition titled “Rationing to Recession”. Our students were set the task to purchase an outfit from a charity shop, jumble sale or similar and the outfit had to be altered and accessorised as creatively as they liked. Students outfits would be entered under one of four categories; Vintage (representing one of the decades of the Queen’s reign), Everyday, Evening Wear and Bridal.

Our entire GCSE student’s entered into the competition with seven of seventeen students making it through to the final fashion show held in the beautiful Cathedral as part of the Flower Festival. Alisha Tannahill one of our very creative and innovative GCSE students who entered won her category section of “Vintage”, creating an embellished bodice top with layered skirt. Not only did Alisha win her category she also won the overall competition, winning £50 cash and a specially sculptured ornament pictured right.

Olympade are in the Final!!

The Olympade team, have been announced as one of three finalists at the upcoming Enterprise 500 final at Excelsior Academy on Wednesday 4th July. The brief was to create a product / service that would create a legacy after the London 2012 Olympics. After much deliberation students opted for an energy drink with flavours representing the major competitors at the games.

Students have been working hard over the past term to come up with a business and marketing plan for the business and have even started production on the range of drinks with the help of the college chef Mr Dalton.

Students will take completed products, along with a merchandise table to the final on the 4th July and stand a good chance of winning the £200 first prize. Stay tuned for future blog updates about the Enterprise 500 competition.
